Planting Trees You’ll Never Sit Under

Whitney Benefits Trustee
There is an old saying that society grows great when people plant trees whose shade they will never sit under. One of the things I appreciate most about serving as a Trustee of Whitney Benefits is reflecting on how well that idea describes the vision of Edward A. Whitney.
Many people make charitable gifts during their lifetime. Others leave gifts through their estate. What makes Mr. Whitney’s legacy so unique is not simply the generosity of his gift, but the vision behind it. More than a century ago, he created a structure designed to serve future generations of Sheridan County residents—people he would never meet and needs he could never fully anticipate.
Think about how much our world has changed since Mr. Whitney’s passing in 1917. The industries that drive our economy are different. Technology has transformed how we learn, work, and communicate. The educational opportunities available today would have been difficult to imagine at the time.
Yet despite all that change, the core purpose of Whitney Benefits remains remarkably relevant: creating opportunities for people and strengthening the community we call home. Through education, community partnerships, and investments that enhance quality of life, Whitney Benefits continues to help make Sheridan County a place where people can learn, grow, and thrive.
When I attend community events, visit Sheridan College, or meet students pursuing new opportunities, I am reminded that many of these successes are possible because one individual had the foresight to invest in a future he would never see. Few legacies endure for generations, but Mr. Whitney’s continues to create opportunities for people throughout Sheridan County every day.
As Trustees, we have the responsibility of carrying that vision forward. Stewardship is not simply about managing assets. It is about understanding the intent behind those assets and ensuring they continue to create meaningful opportunities for future generations.
That responsibility often requires balancing present needs with long-term sustainability. The decisions we make today should not only benefit our community now, but also preserve the ability of future Trustees to address challenges and opportunities that have yet to emerge.
I often wonder what Mr. Whitney would think if he could see Sheridan County today. He would undoubtedly notice many changes, but I believe he would recognize something familiar as well: a community that continues to invest in its people, support education, and work together to create opportunities for the next generation.
More than 100 years after his passing, Edward A. Whitney continues to provide shade for a community he could only imagine. We are fortunate to benefit from that vision today, and equally fortunate to help carry it forward for generations to come.
