Building Community

This year through some business planning I began working on the vision and mission of my business. I own a little coffee shop/café called Java Moon in downtown Sheridan and decided to expand into a second location, so some business planning was necessary to really be extra clear about business goals and moving forward.

As I sat down and thought about the mission and the vision of my coffeeshop, community immediately came to mind. Building a place where people can comfortably gather was top of the list. At Java Moon, I witness how important it is for people to gather with others and feel part of something.

Sheridan is lucky to have many organizations that support community and provide places for our community to thrive. In 2022 I had the privilege of joining the Whitney Benefits board to assist in living out Mr. Whitney’s legacy and being directly involved in helping the Sheridan community.

Through Mr. Whitney’s legacy we have another great gathering place- Whitney Commons Park. Being part of this park from the beginning, I can attest that this park was built with community in mind. From the playground to the Dorothy King Reflective Garden, Whitney Commons it is a place where community thrives every single day. There is something for everyone to enjoy at the park. The amphitheater, the labyrinth, the sculptures and the spray ground are bonuses to the amazing features this park provides to appeal to all in our community, as well as those visiting Sheridan.

There is nothing more community than witnessing the activities at Whitney Commons. Families gather to let their kids play and run around, teenagers grab a volleyball or soccer to enjoy the sport in a big field. Many people use the park for their morning or afternoon walk and while on their walk run into their neighbors and enjoy a quick conversation. Parties, concerts and plays are held at the park- all a witness to our community gathering- creating stronger ties and bonds and making a healthier Sheridan. And just think what visitors from out of town think about the park? They step inside and immediately and feel part of our welcoming Sheridan community.

Mr. Whitney knew the true meaning of community and we are so lucky to have the Whitney Commons Park. As spring arrives be sure to go enjoy all that Whitney Commons has to offer and thank all those that keep it maintained and beautiful for our community to enjoy!
